January 2016

New South Acton Station Opening Event
MASSDOT and the MBTA join the Baker Administration, Federal, State, and Local Public officials and neighbors to celebrate the opening of the New South Acton Commuter Rail Station at the station 10:00 Saturday 30 January.

MBTA Public Meeting
Comments about the MBTA Fare Proposal and the proposed Commuter Rail schedule changes are shared at a public meeting 6:00p-8:00p Thursday 28 January at the Concord Town House, 22 Monument Square, Concord.

December 2015

New South Acton station opening Saturday 19 December
Construction of the New South Acton Station is substantially complete and the station will be open for its first day of Commuter Rail Operation on Saturday 19 December. The first train is scheduled for 7:23am.

The new South Acton Station includes new full-train length and accessible high-level platforms. An enclosed overhead walkway is served by both stairs and elevators. There is a new second passenger drop-off area on Maple Street adjacent to the inbound platform.

Additional station amenities include new canopies, passenger shelters, benches, windscreens, signage, train approach warning system, variable message signs, and platform lighting. The station will be equipped with closed circuit television (CCTV) video surveillance cameras, police emergency call boxes, and public telephones.

New Train Schedule postponed until May
The new train schedule is not going into effect in December as planned. Feedback from commuters east of Acton about the evening rush-hour schedule, plus feedback on other lines, has delayed the new North Station schedule, including faster service on the Fitchburg line, until May.

Interim Train Schedule effective Monday 14 December
A schedule that takes advantage of the speed improvements from the Fitchburg Line Improvement Project won't take effect until May. However, an interim train schedule takes effect Monday 14 December. Most of the interim train schedule is unchanged, but there is an additional train outbound and inbound during the morning commute.

November 2015

Track Work Saturday 07 November - Sunday 08 November
Weekend work to complete the double tracking through the South Acton Station continues. Work begins 7:00am Saturday 07 November and continues into the evening. Work resumes 7:00am Sunday 08 November through the evening.

Temporary Boarding Areas During November and December
Riders that board trains at South Acton, use temporary restricted boarding areas through December as track and station elements are completed. Boarding the trains is slower during this time.

Railroad Street parking closed Friday 20 November
The Railroad Street parking lot for the South Acton station is closed on Friday 20 November for resurfacing.

Tree clearing Saturday 21 November
To create safe sightlines for railroad signals, crews clear trees on the Commonwealth-owned MBTA right-of-way east of the Main Street (Rt.27) bridge. Work conducted during the day on Saturday 21 November comprises a significant clearing of trees on MBTA property in this area.

Partial resurfacing of main parking 20-21 November
The drop-off lane of the main South Acton parking lot on Central Street is resurfaced on the weekend of 21 November. The parking lot remains open, however there is disruption to use of the drop-off lane, and a few parking spaces are unavailable.

Weekend Service Resumes Saturday 26 November
Weekend train service resumes Saturday 26 November. Since the Fitchburg Line Improvement Project is nearing completion, no more weekend suspensions are scheduled.

October 2015

Overnight Track Work Saturday 31 October - Sunday 01 November
In order to complete the double tracking through the South Acton Station, the temporary platform will be removed and the second track will be installed in its place. Work will begin 2:00am Saturday 31 October and will continue through Sunday 01 November, including overnight hours, until the track installation is complete. Police details will be employed to manage construction traffic at Central and Martin Street grade crossings as necessary.

August 2015

Concord Bridge Installation over the Weekend of 28-30 August
Installation of a new bridge in Concord requires round-the-clock work over the weekend of 28-30 August. Work begins after the rush hour trains on Friday 28 August. Buses transport passengers west of Concord on the 7:50pm and later trains out of North Station. Work continues through the weekend in order to be completed for Monday morning trains.

July 2015

Martin Street paving Saturday 18 July
The Martin Street grade crossing is being repaved on Saturday 18 July.

Overnight Bridge Installation - Thursday 02 July
Overnight construction occurs at the South Acton Station. The steel for the walkway bridge between the inbound and outbound station houses is installed.

A crane is set up in the station parking lot starting approximately 9:00pm Thursday evening. After the end of train service service at about 1:00am, the crane installs the overhead walkway on the newly constructed steel station supports. The steel platform is placed over the tracks. Upon the completion of the installation the crane is taken down and removed prior to the restoration of train service for the Friday morning commute.

June 2015

Track work on Saturdays
Track construction is occurring on Saturdays in June between Central Street and Parker Street, including in South Acton Station. Tracks are being finished and aligned. New elements of the station are being installed.

May 2015

Weekend Construction 16-17 May
Double track alignment in the South Action Station area happens through the weekend of 16-17 May. Construction begins 1:00am Saturday 16 May and continues straight through the evening of Sunday 17 May. Major construction efforts must be completed over weekends, while the track is out of service.

Weekend Construction 9-10 May
Over the weekend of 9-10 May new track crossovers are installed east of Main Street, followed by track alignment west of Martin Street and in the area of Central Street. Construction begins 1:00am Saturday 16 May and continues straight through the evening of Sunday 17 May. Major construction efforts must be completed over weekends, while the track is out of service.

April 2015

No Weekend Service through Sunday 22 November
Due to bridge and track work that is part of the Fitchburg Line Improvement Project, weekend service is suspended through Sunday 22 November, except for the holiday weekends of 23-24 May, 4-5 July, and 5-6 September. Busing is not be provided during weekend service interruptions. Normal weekday service is not affected.

Weekend Service West of Concord Replaced by Busses over the weekend of 24-25 January

Some construction tasks for the Fitchburg Line Improvement Project require that shuttle buses replace all scheduled Fitchburg/South Acton Line trips between Concord and Fitchburg Stations in both directions from start to end of service on Saturday 24 January through Sunday 25 January.

Shuttling the following stops: Concord, West Concord, South Acton, Littleton / Rte 495, Ayer, Shirley, North Leominster, and Fitchburg.

All shuttle buses are accessible for persons with disabilities. Regular Fitchburg/South Acton Line train service will resume at the start of service on Monday 26 January. Full weekend service is available during the wither months through March 2015.

Station House Framing Begins

The steel for the station houses began to arrive mid month, and the assembly of the stations houses started.

November 2014

Installation of the new outbound platform

Installation of the elevated outbound platform occurs on Saturdays 15 and 22 November, primarily during the day. The platform consists of 25 precast concrete forms, delivered throughout the installation by truck to the Railroad Street parking lot east of the station off Main Street.

Preparation begins Friday 14 November at the station as construction crews set up a crane to install the new platform sections, displacing about 10 parking spaces in the Main parking lot to allow for the staging of the crane. Work begins at about 5:00am each Saturday, as the crane is moved to the Railroad Street parking lot.

On-site police details coordinate the trucking movements and maintain access in and out of this location for project neighbors.

October 2014

Weekend Service Suspended West of Brandeis/Roberts October-November

Due to on-going construction on the Fitchburg line, weekend service is suspended west of Brandeis/Roberts Saturday 11 October through Saturday 22 November. Specifically, service will be suspended west of Brandeis/Roberts:

  • October 11, 12, 18, 19, 25 & 26
  • November 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16 & 22
Full weekend service will resume during the wither months of December 2014 through March 2015.

September 2014

Walkway from Railroad Street relocated
In order to begin construction of the Railroad Street entrance to the new South Action station, the temporary walkway from Railroad Street to the main parking lot and temporary platform is being relocated. A portion of the temporary walkway is moving further away from the tracks during the week of 01 September. Eventually the Railroad Street entrance to the station will consist of a canopy-covered ramp up to the outbound platform.

Volunteers to serve as acting passengers
On Sunday 21 September 7:00am-10:00am the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), Keolis Commuter Services and the town of Acton are conducting an emergency response drill. For added realism volunteers are acting in the role of passengers during a simulated incident. Some volunteers are playing the roles of injured passengers, and all volunteers experience a first-hand incident response as coordinated by first responders. All volunteers receive a participation certificate. EMT CEU hours may also be awarded to those eligible.

August 2014

New train schedule in effect Monday 04 August

Several bridges in Concord are being reconstructed as part of the Fitchburg Line Improvement Project. To accommodate the use of only a single track between Lincoln and Acton, a new train schedule is in effect for the duration of the construction. The biggest changes are to the evening rush hour trains. In addition trains that do not go all the way to Fitchburg turn around at Littleton/495 instead of South Acton.

Inbound platform installation Saturday 16 August

The inbound platform sections will be trucked in and installed on Saturday 09 August. The trucks will come up Main Street from Maynard starting at 7:00am through 7:00pm. A crane will put them into place from Railroad Street.

July 2014

New WiFi System for Commuter Rail

The MBTA has signed a licence agreement for an upgrade Wifi system to be installed throughout the commuter rail system.

5% Fare Increase

The MBTA has proposed an approximately 5% across-the-board fare increase effective Tuesday 01 July. The one-way fare from Acton to Boston would go up from $8.75 to $9.25 under the plan.

All Weekend Service Suspended July-September

Due to on-going construction on the Fitchburg line, weekend service on the entire South Acton / Fitchburg line is suspended Saturday 12 July through Sunday 05 October, except for Labor Day weekend 30-31 August. Specifically, all service will be suspended:

  • July 12, 13, 19, 20, 26 & 27
  • August 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 23 & 24
  • September 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 & 28
  • October 4 & 5

April 2014

Weekend Service Suspended West of Brandeis/Roberts May-June

Due to on-going construction on the Fitchburg line, weekend service is suspended west of Brandeis/Roberts Friday 26 April through Sunday 29 June, except for Memorial Day weekend 24-25 May. Specifically, service will be suspended west of Brandeis/Roberts:

  • April 26 & 27
  • May 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18 & 31
  • June 1, 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 & 29

November 2013

Grade crossings to be replaced

The eastern Central Street grade crossing is being reconstructed over the weekend of 16-17 November. Central Street will be closed at the grade crossing at 11:00pm Friday 15 November until 5:00am Monday 18 November. No substitute bus service is being provided.

On Saturday 16 November a rail train is delivering 1300’ long strings of rail between Central and Martin Streets. At times this delivery will likely block Martin Street for extended periods during Saturday morning, while the rail sections are off loaded. The town is allowing residents to park at the train station during the construction to avoid blockages.

The Martin Street grade crossing is being reconstructed over the weekend of 23-24 November. Martin Street will be closed starting 11:00pm Friday 22 November until 5:00am Monday 25 November. Substitute bus service is being provided between Acton and Littleton stations. The town is allowing residents to park at the train station during the construction to avoid detours out of the Maple Street / Stow Street area.

October 2013

South Acton Station construction update
The South Acton Train Station construction by McCourt Construction is on-going with platform and building foundation work nearly completed. Platform casings and the building steel components are being fabricated off site and will be installed in the near term.

Fitchburg Line Project construction update
Double track installation though Acton is substantially complete with JF White making final adjustments and installations necessary to tie in track at Martin and Central streets. Signal improvements on the line are continuing in town with new signal bungalows delivered. Signal work by JF White through the South Acton Station site is being conducted during the first week of October. Work continues on the West Acton Bridge near Idylwilde farm.

September 2013

Train service suspended west of Brandeis/Roberts on weekends September-November.
Due to work on the Fitchburg Line Improvement Project, there is no train service west of Brandeis/Roberts on the following dates:

  • September 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 & 29;
  • October 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 26 & 27;
  • November 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 23 & 24.
All trains turn around at Brandeis/Roberts. No substitute bus service is provided.

June 2013

Littleton Station Opens
The new Littleton Train Station opened on Friday 21 June with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The new station, which is near the junction of Rt.2 and I495, provides a canopy to get out of the weather, is fully accessible, and allows passengers to board trains faster without climbing stairs.

Train service suspended west of S. Acton on weekends in May-August, except holidays.
Due to work on the Fitchburg Line Improvement Project, there is no train service west of S. Acton on the following dates:

  • June 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23, 29 & 30;
  • July 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 & 28.
  • August 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 & 25;
All trains turn around at S. Acton. No substitute bus service is provided.

Mass. Ave. grade crossing in W. Acton closed 8-9 June.
The Mass. Ave. grade crossing in W. Action is closed on the weekend of 8-9 June for the installation of a second track. Curbing work, which does not require the street to be closed, continues on Monday 10 June and Tuesday 11 June.

Central Street closed at Elm Street 04 June.
Central Street is closed at Elm Street on Tuesday 04 June. Track defects repaired and new curbing and sidewalks installed.

Littleton Station opens 03 June.
The Littleton Station on the MBTA Fitchburg line is complete and opens Monday 03 June. The station has new platforms with walkway and fly-over.

Temporary S. Action Station in use 01-02 June.
Due to construction at the main S. Action station the temporary station east of Main Street is being used over the weekend of 01-02 June.

April 2013

Pick-up/drop-off lane moved.
To make room for construction of the new station house, the passenger pick-up/drop-off lane is relocated west to the right-rear corner of the parking lot. Cars won't be allowed in the old pick-up/drop-off lane. This change results in the loss of 3-4 parking spaces throughout 2013.

The first 4 commuters using the alternate parking at the Mt. Calvary church or the West Acton Fire Station will receive free parking and transportation to the S. Acton station. See the MinuteVan Rail Shuttle site for details.

Bike lockers moved.
To make room for construction of the new station house, the east-side (left-most) set of bike lockers is relocated further east on the left edge of the parking lot. The west-side (right-most) bike lockers are unaffected.

MBTA System upgrades causes delays.

Arlington Street in W. Acton closed for the weekend of 13-15 April.
It was necessary to close the grade crossing on Arlington Street in W. Acton, while it is being reconstructed and new signal lights are installed.


March 2013

Construction is starting.
In early April the first major step is to fence off the tracks and vacant lot on Maple Street. When this happens, commuters walking to the station from the Maple Street have to walk across the Rt. 27 bridge and down Railroad Street to the station platform. After about 6 months, the Maple Street entrance to the station will open, and commuters will be able get directly onto the inbound platform.


December 2012

The groundbreaking for the Acton station was in early December, and McCourt Construction was given a notice to proceed. Construction should last about 18 months.
